In the last issue, I spoke of one new variant EG.5, an Omicron subvariant that the W.H.O. escalated to “variant of interest” (VOI). Soon after that, there emerged another SARS-CoV-2 variant, this one with over 30 mutations. It’s BA.2.86, nicknamed “Pirola” and is still a “variant under monitoring” (VUM). Mask mandates have been reinstated in select hospitals, a few school campuses and one entertainment production company called Lionsgate.
Introduction: My 86-year-old parents insist they’re recovering from their bout with COVID, contracted four weeks ago either on their way to, or in Iceland. But my highly energetic mother is still canceling long car trips to see her friends two counties over. “I really feel it’s the oxygen” that’s lacking now, making her “lethargic” which is something she doesn’t ever say. While they got booster shots two weeks before traveling, the Icelandic health workers they consulted upon falling ill said they only needed to test for norovirus. Parents finally bought their own COVID rapid tests days later, tested positive and missed the window to benefit from the antiviral Paxlovid.
