#84 Also: How a president’s character could affect respiratory transmission of mpox
**Once the holidays start, life picks up speed. Which makes right now a great time to get the updated COVID vaccine, along with the flu shot. This year’s mRNA (Pfizer, Moderna) *and* protein (Novavax) vaccines target the KP.2 COVID variant.**
Introduction: Welcome back to TracingVRL, formerly known as TracingCOVID, the software-journalism project tracking the pandemic information going viral. When I estimated in August 2021 this project would take four months to clear up COVID misinformation, who’d have guessed we’d be here 38 months later talking for the fourth time about SpaceX CEO Elon Musk?
SpaceX corporation’s satellite subdivision Starlink launched just 10 months before the U.S. declared COVID-19 to be a public health emergency. And just before the vaccine came out, in September 2020, Musk signaled to the antivaxxers he was one of them. He told podcast host Kara Swisher his family would not take the vaccine when it came out.
But signs were there even earlier, when few were looking for them, that Musk was flirting with the population that subscribes to, or evangelizes, this decade’s most standard menu of conspiracy myths: greenhouse gas emissions causing climate change is overblown alarmism, and the rotating vaccine-of-the-day is worse than whatever disease it’s designed to prevent.
Since 2020 was an upended time, to be fair, let’s look at what happened. It’s a safe bet to say the two most profitable disproven snake oil treatments this pandemic, to date, have been Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and Ivermectin. On March 16, 2020 Musk tweeted a shoddy Word document that would later become a preprint claiming HCQ was effective for treating COVID. For the full picture, Musk’s HCQ Word document became a preprint that would soon become a retracted peer-reviewed study. In fairness, we should recall that back then, few people knew what a preprint was. But still we should ask where did Musk, on March 16 2020, get a copy of the Word document that would become the HCQ-as-COVID-treatment preprint uploaded to MedRxiv.org? And why was he in a hurry to post it to Twitter? By April 6, Musk, Trump, Tucker Carlson and the HCQ doctor, Didier Raoult were already entangled in the misleading study debacle.
All this is to say that Elon Musk is slowly emerging to have been a long-time actor in the alt-reality conspiracy movement1. And Musk figures prominently in this newsletter’s section titled “Scheduled, ‘Spontaneous’ Anti-Immigrant Riots ft. Musk & Murdoch.”
Onto today’s newsletter, unpaywalled for election season.

I’m lucky to be related to people who worked hard to transcend their inherited narcissism. Still, I once had an imprint for the malignant type of narcissist and walked blindly into relationships with them. I love this description from psychologist Dr. George Simon, that covert-aggressive narcissists are like runaway trains with defective brakes.
How Leaders With Weak ‘Internal Brakes’ Will Affect Mpox Transmission
Mpox is now slowly spreading in the U.S. in a drug-resistant form. At close distances, respiratory transmission of mpox has been proven to happen.
Since Donald Trump is not president right now, one can’t say for sure he would exacerbate the spread of this disfiguring disease, of which the more fatal variant or “clade” is now circulating in Congo. But the record shows he was weak in the face of temptation to partisanly exploit the chaos that was the COVID pandemic. News archives also show that he was more knowledgeable of COVID’s deadliness than he first let on. And in open defiance of Dr. Fauci’s guidance against it, then-President Trump promoted hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) as a promising COVID treatment.
Apr 17 2020 Trump tweets 'liberate' Michigan, two other states with Dem governors (The Detroit News) - A month after officially declaring COVID-19 a nationwide emergency, then-President Donald Trump who was running for re-election politicized the pandemic when he targeted three Democratic-governed states Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia. In tweets “calling for officials to ‘liberate’ the states amid protests over stay-at-home orders aimed at stemming the spread of COVID-19,” he roused citizens to insubordination in Minnesota, then helmed by Governor Tim Walz who is now the Democratic vice presidential candidate, and in Michigan, a state whose Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer was months later subject of a kidnapping scheme by COVID-minimizing paramilitary group. Nascent planning for what would become the kidnapping plot commenced two days after then-President Trump’s tweets, on April 19th, when paramilitaries attempted to obtain Whitmer’s home address. On April 30th, armed protesters entered the Michigan state capital.
Finally Trump on April 17 in the most inflammatory of the three tweets posted a call to also “liberate” Virginia, a state governed then by Democrat Ralph Northam, then the only U.S. governor who was a medical doctor. Alluding to the gun-owning provision of the Bill of Rights, Trump’s third tweet read, “‘LIBERATE VIRGINIA, and save your great 2nd Amendment. It is under siege!’”
Sep 09 2020 ‘Play it down’: Trump admits to concealing the true threat of coronavirus in new Woodward book (CNN) - In February of 2020, “in a series of interviews with [Bob] Woodward, Trump revealed that he had a surprising level of detail about the threat of the virus earlier than previously known. ‘Pretty amazing,’ Trump told Woodward, adding that the coronavirus was maybe five times ‘more deadly’ than the flu.”
Oct 08 2020 'Deeply disturbing': Feds charge extremists in domestic terror plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, create civil war (Detroit Free Press) - “Attorney General Dana Nessel referred to the accused [kidnappers] as ‘extremists’ who are hoping to recruit new members ‘by seizing on a moment of civil unrest’ to wreak havoc on the country.” “Members of the plot said they wanted to complete the kidnapping before the election Nov. 3” “More than a dozen people from several states met in Dublin, Ohio, on June 6 and talked about creating a society that followed the U.S. Bill of Rights …”
J.D. Vance Said He’ll Continue Lying
If we want to effectively manage pandemics in the future, should we elect leaders who announce without shame they’re making up facts?
When busy citizens see up close a pattern of lying, like the jurors in the Alex Jones trial witnessed, they tend to hold those public figures to account.
J.D. Vance’s stated intention to continue lying may not serve him with American voters in the long run. If he wins in the future, it’ll likely be in spite of, not due to, his overt plan to break bad with the truth.
Sep 18 2024 JD Vance boasts he’ll keep calling Springfield Haitians ‘illegal aliens’ even though he knows they aren’t (Independent UK) - “JD Vance has suggested that he will continue to call Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio ‘illegal’ aliens despite knowing that they’re here legally.”
Sep 18 2024 How the Trump Campaign Ran With Rumors About Pet-Eating Migrants—After Being Told They Weren’t True (Wall Street Journal) - “City Manager Bryan Heck fielded an unusual question at City Hall on the morning of Sept. 9, from a staff member of Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance. The staffer called to ask if there was any truth to bizarre rumors about Haitian immigrants and pets in Springfield. … “I told them these claims were baseless” Beck told the Wall Street Journal.
Sep 15 2024 JD Vance admits he is willing to ‘create stories’ to get media attention (The Guardian) - “Asked by the CNN host Dana Bash whether the false rumors centering on Springfield, Ohio, were ‘a story that you created’, Vance replied, ‘Yes!’ He then said the claims were rooted in ‘accounts from … constituents’ and that he as well as the Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump, had spoken publicly about them to draw attention to Springfield’s relatively large Haitian population.”
People Who Want Another Pandemic Check Favor Trump on Economy
Mar 29 2024 Willful Optimism for COVID Year 5 (TracingVRL) - “It’s an election year here in the U.S. Is it possible the voters who reportedly miss the economy of the previous president, whose penultimate year in office coincided with COVID landing on our shores, actually miss the COVID aid and COVID stimulus checks and COVID business loans? So far, this has not been explored publicly.”
Apr 14 2024 Four Years Out, Some Voters Look Back at Trump’s Presidency More Positively (New York Times) - “When asked the one thing they remembered from Mr. Trump’s time in office, a vast majority of positive comments referred to the state of the economy. Many specifically remembered the stimulus checks with his signature printed on them that were sent to tens of millions of Americans during the waning days of his presidency.”
Vocab Rehab: ‘conspiracy’ variants
Because free speech is protected in this country (with exceptions for libel, slander, incitement to violence etc.,) the TracingVRL editor is stating here and now that sometimes parties conspire to spread harmful conspiracy myths. As such, let’s get these terms straight: 1) conspiracy myths, 2) conspiracy theories, 3) conspiracy influencers.
Sep 09 2024 Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt: The State of Global Antisemitism (92nd Street Y on YouTube) - “Antisemitism is built on the foundation .. the cornerstone of antisemitism is the conspiracy myth—and note that I don't say ‘conspiracy theory’ wipe that off your vocabulary. Theories can be proven, okay? This [antisemitism] is a conspiracy myth that Jews control the banks the Jews control the media the Jews control the courts.“
Jan 23 2023 Four Oath Keepers Found Guilty of Seditious Conspiracy Related to U.S. Capitol Breach (U.S. Department of Justice) - “According to the evidence at trial, in the months leading up to January 6, these defendants and their co-conspirators plotted to oppose by force the lawful transfer of presidential power, including by amassing an armed “quick reaction force” on the outskirts of the District of Columbia.”
Oct 04 2024 5 Types Of People Who Spread Conspiracy Theories [Myths] They Know Are Wrong (The Conversation) - There exist conspiracy influencers who spread conspiracy myths they know to be wrong. “As for other conspiracies it hawks, Russia is famous for taking both sides in any contentious issue, spreading lies online to foment conflict and polarization. People who actually believe in a conspiracy tend to stick to a side. Meanwhile, Russians knowingly deploy what one analyst has called a ‘fire hose of falsehoods.’”

May 26 2024 Apparently different comments show up on videos based on the user (Reddit.com/r/TikTokCringe) - Imagine seeing Kamala Harris’ face with comments saying she’s a good candidate. Imagine seeing the same video with a plethora of comments saying they liked her, but then turned against her and are sitting out the election. This would influence undecided voters. Voters need to know if TikTok is in fact A/B splitting different comment sets for the same video.

Public health is affected by the 2024 Supreme Court’s overturning of the 1984 doctrine Chevron vs. Natural Resources Defense Council, or “Chevron vs. NRDC”. This subjects federal agency decisions to the courts, and the decimation of for-profit news media will shrink the likelihood that overturning of standards in environmental and public health matters — like flouridated water, which is under a judge’s review right now — will be known by the public.
A wonderful C-Span series called “Landmark Cases” would be the perfect place to broadcast more in-depth explainers of cases like Chevron vs. NRDC. But it only ran for two seasons. And C-Span is funded in a distinct structure by drawing a percentage from cable-TV and satellite-TV license fees, and that funding stream is shrinking. Streaming TV services like Roku and YouTube TV so far are neglecting to pay to carry C-Span, making it unavailable to cord-cutter residents who don’t get cable. I miss C-Span’s Washington Journal program, one of the few shared-reality news spaces not reliant on wealthy grant donors or commercial advertisers.
May 08 Opinion: Why doesn’t YouTube TV carry C-SPAN? (The Hill) - “So why does Google block C-SPAN? The simple answer seems to be because they can. Over the years, new competitors to cable such as Verizon Fios and satellite TV providers DirecTV and Dish recognized their public interest obligation to include C-SPAN in their bundle of channels. Google’s decision to sidestep this responsibility not only harms its subscribers, but also threatens the existence of the nonprofit C-SPAN for everyone else.”
The ‘Spontaneous’ Scheduled Anti-Immigrant Riots of 2023 & 2024 ft. Musk & Murdoch
Because one of the most infamous COVID-minimizer blogs, England’s The Daily Sceptic, amplified Ohio anti-immigrant narratives, TracingVRL is publishing a section on this series of events.
First: Who is Rupert Murdoch? He’s maestro of an international set of news media outlets stretching across Britain, Australia and the U.S. Since Murdoch’s most infamous cultural legacy is FOX News channel, clips listed below published by one of the Murdoch-helmed corporations, like the New York Post and the Daily Mail UK are labeled with an 🇫 emoji.
News clips documenting far-right figures spouting hot air about civil war are labeled with the crossed-swords and hot air balloon emojis ⚔️ 🎈 .
When looking at the pattern of anti-immigrant riots across Germany, Ireland, England and possibly soon in the U.S., this anti-immigrant activity looks like a template pattern carried out in country after country, often encouraged by Elon Musk. The stokers appear to first look for a Brown or black immigrant population – never a caucasian “expat” population – burgeoning in some town. Then a coordinated group appears to wait for a violent incident which they’ll test out and publicize in a way that, in messages distributed on Telegram or X, successfully recruits rioters. The first spark incident rarely sticks—who here remembers the 2023 Haitian driver that accidentally killed an 11-year-old in Springfield Ohio that was re-publicized this September, anybody? It was erased after Vance and Trump waged an even more stupefying Haitian migrant pet-eating narrative that has no basis in fact. Notably, in two of the three countries so far, a spark incident involved a perpetrator stabbing children. Finally, in more than country, the trigger incident most successfully used to recruit anti-immigrant rioters involved a perpetrator who was not an illegal immigrant, but a nonwhite Black or brown legal migrant or native-born citizen.

Aug 14 The parallels between riots in the UK and Ireland are alarming (New Statesman | UK) - “The surface-level similarities with the recent Southport attack and subsequent riots in England are hard to ignore: an assault on young children followed by civil unrest, which quickly proved be an expression of antagonism to immigration writ large, rather than a response to the particular incident. After Southport, for example, much of the agitation has been directed at the Muslim community; that the suspect was born in Wales to Rwandan parents and has no known links to Islam did not prevent rioters from attacking the town’s mosque. In Ireland, the clashes were accompanied by signs declaring Ireland is full, no matter that the man charged was a naturalised citizen.”

In the immediate aftermath, locals in Southport were shocked, angry and looking for someone to blame. Journalism Impact of TracingVRL
=>You heard it here first: advertisers’ abandonment of democracy
News health is public health. And on April 9 of this year, TracingVRL announced the “Brand Anti-Fragility Movement” was afoot. Why? Because advertising in newspapers drives down the cost of subscriptions and cover prices for readers, and funds investigative reporting. But we need a movement to make advertisers less skittish, because in recent years programmatic advertising admins filtered out the keyword “news” when placing ad buys because they feared their brand appearing next to disinformation within news. This thereby drives up the cost of news to citizens who want to stay informed. As I said in April, “reader subscription dollars are carrying democracy right now, more [advertising] brands are abandoning it altogether.”
Months later, in July, we saw more in this vein from other outlets. NewsGuard published Reality Check Commentary: News Media's 1.28% Crisis. Their newsletter showed the contrast from 1980. Here’s NewsGuard put it:
A new data point highlighting the crisis in funding journalism emerged at a House Judiciary Committee hearing last week: Online news publishers now get just 1.28 percent of brand advertising spending, according to Christian Juhl, the head of GroupM, the world’s largest ad agency. Newsrooms are shrinking as their traditional leading source of funding dries up. As a measure of the collapse in revenues for news, consider that in 1980, newspapers and magazines got 62 percent of all global ad spending.
=>Moneyball author Michael Lewis agrees his book spurred decades of dehumanizing data myopia
In November 2023, TracingCOVID revived the concept of team chemistry through a review, with fan art, of sports reporter Joan Ryan’s book Intangibles. It’s a response to Michael Lewis’ assertion that analytics proved team chemistry doesn’t exist.
How wrong Michael Lewis was about the irrelevance of intra-team chemistry. He even said so himself last month:
Sep 09 2024 Did ‘Moneyball’ ruin baseball? Why author Michael Lewis agrees it hurt the game (San Francisco Chronicle) - “Among those who believe it has been bad for baseball: Michael Lewis. ... Fans point to the increase in analytics-driven platooning and roster churn, trying to find value on the margins, for waning interest, complaining that the game is now more about numbers than people. Many prefer set lineups and rotations so they can root for everyday players and invest in jerseys without fear their favorites will be the victim of metrics.”
