A Breaking Context Bulletin for Paying Subscribers
This post concerns bird flu, and I’m grateful to you paying subscribers because it’s hard for a freelance reporter to report breaking news. A freelancer, unlike a staff reporter, has to weigh the costs and benefits — to themselves and journalism overall — of publishing something right away they could get paid for had they exercised the fortitude to withhold enough of that information until they found an editor at a publication who would greenlight their story pitch.
It’s one reason I set up my own news outlet. So I could report breaking news without the time delay of pitching it to various outlets. I had other reasons, but that’s a big one. Everything below this line is behind the paywall.
